The International Society for Military Ethics in Europe
Leadership. Ethics. Service.

This year, the annual DACH ethicists' meeting took place in Switzerland on a regular basis. It was held in Lucerne from September 3-6, 2024. The focus of the keynote speeches, replies and discussion was on ethical education in the face of death and technology. The various aspects of the life-threatening activities of military action, but also the complex tasks for new technologies, in particular data-based systems, were examined and compared to each other from the respective perspectives of the three German-speaking countries.

EuroISME was represented by its Vice-President Stefan Gugerel from Austria, who was also asked for a greeting address at the opening ceremony. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Immanuel Kant and the takeover of the General Secretariat of the Council of Europe (which turns 75 this year) by the Swiss Alain Berset, he interpreted ethical education in the armed forces as a contribution to the establishment of peaceful relations between states. Three other (former) EuroISME board members, Andrea Ellner, Thomas Elssner and Daniel Messelken, also attended the meeting.
