The International Society for Military Ethics in Europe
Leadership. Ethics. Service.

By mid-September, Executive Director Ted van Baarda was back in Tartu, Estonia, in order to teach military ethics at the Baltic Defence College.

It was an international class, with nearly eighty students from mostly NATO countries plus some students from Ukraine. After a general introduction, the class was divided into seven syndicates – each of which was tasked with analysing an ethical dilemma from the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’. The large number of nationalities present certainly make discussions more interesting. It was also fascinating to learn that the famous expert on the laws of war, Fjodor Martens, was not a Russian but an Estonian who lived in Tartu.
