Webinar: Military Ethics and Special Forces – What can we learn from the Brereton Report?

A special Euro-ISME and Kings’ College London webinar.

Date and topic

Thursday, 10 December 2020, 17:00-19:00 CET (UTC+1)

Brereton Report coverThe publication of the Brereton report in Australia is a potentially seminal moment for the teaching and practice of military ethics. Condemnation of individuals might come easily, but what were the circumstances that led elite soldiers to transgress so badly? Were there underlying failures of training and leadership, as well as unacceptable actions in the field? What lessons are there for the armed forces generally, not just special forces?

Panelists

Euro-ISME and Kings’ College London have invited a panel of uniquely qualified people to discuss these and other issues.

Professor David Whetham is Professor of Ethics and the Military Profession and Director of the Centre for Military Ethics at King’s College London. He is the author of the Leadership and Ethics Review (Annex A) to the Brereton report.

Dr Deane Peter Baker is Associate Professor of International & Political Studies at the University of New South Wales and has long experience of working with the Australian armed forces on ethical training and education.

Dr Roger Herbert is a distinguished professor of military ethics at the US Naval Academy, but has extensive experience of working as a US Navy SEAL.
